Naturopathy

Naturopathy is a holistic therapy based upon the belief that the body has within it the means of maintaining health and fighting disease. All naturopathic treatment is intended to restore the patient to healthy balance, focussing primarily on diet but also including various other therapies including osteopathy, massage, hydrotherapy, vitamin, mineral and basic herbal supplementation and exercise.

The cause of disease Naturopaths believe that maintaining a healthy body and mind is the best method of avoiding disease. Conversely poor eating habits and stress can cause imbalances that in turn lead to degenerative disorders and psychosomatic illnesses. Conditions that respond well to naturopathic treatment include digestive disorders, headaches, hormonal problems, skin problems, respiratory disorders, high blood pressure, fatigue and arthritis.

The naturopathic diet Naturopathy pays a great deal of attention to food. It is one of the most important factors affecting health, and one that can easily be changed. The western diet is generally full of processed foods containing too much sugar and animal fat but too little fibre – far removed from the natural sources of nutrition that our bodies are designed to digest. The naturopath helps the patient to adjust their diet to one rich in fruit and vegetables, high in fibre, very low in animal fats and with carbohydrates from unrefined sources. These changes may seem difficult but not only will food seem more enjoyable, the improvement in health and energy levels will provide the reward and encouragement to make permanent changes. Once a new habit has been established the individual usually finds it easy to make the changes on a permanent basis.
