1. What will happen when I visit? At your first appointment the practitioner will take your full medical history, ask you to perform a series of simple movements and perform a range of orthopaedic tests to exclude conditions that may require referral. She will then examine you for any weakness or points of strain. You will normally be asked to remove some of your clothing for the treatment. Once the problem has been diagnosed the treatment involves using different techniques including soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and more strenuous manipulation to help correct the imbalance. She may also use electrical therapies such as ultrasound and offer advice on diet, lifestyle and exercise.

2. How many treatments will I need? This depends upon the nature of your problem. Acute pain may require only one or two sessions but chronic problems may require ongoing maintenance. On average people are seen for between 4 and 6 sessions.

3. Can I use my private health insurance? Most companies will pay for osteopathic treatment although you may require a referral from your GP, so it is recommended that you check with your provider and then let us know when you visit if you are intending to use private health cover. However, Kim no longer works with BUPA and AXA PPP. Naturopathy is not currently covered by private medical insurance.

4. Can I be treated during pregnancy? Osteopathy and naturopathy can all be used on pregnant women as long as there are no conditions that indicate otherwise. Osteopathy can be used to treat women during pregnancy with great success. Naturopathy can be used during pregnancy to improve the health of both the mother and growing baby. Advice can be given afterwards to help with weight loss for the mother, to help with breast feeding, to prevent colic and also to help with weaning.

5. Can I be too old or young for treatment? The gentle nature of some osteopathic techniques makes it possible to treat babies that are just hours old or people that are quite elderly or frail. Naturopathy can also be used with all ages. Advice can be given on weaning and childhood ailments and also how to remain healthy, active and well nourished in old age.
